- https://wikitravel.org/en/KedarnathKedarnath - WikitravelKedarnath Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva tucked in the middle of the Himalayan ranges at 3583 meters (11755 feet) above sea level. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains from three sides, a deep valley in the front, and the river Mandakini passing by the temple make it even more beautiful and the most visited pilgrimage spot in India. Kedarnath temple is a well-known pilgrimage spot and is part of 12 jyotirlingas, Panch Kedar, Do Dham, and Char Dham tours in Uttarakhand. Due to the extreme weather in this region, the temple remains open just for six months a year. Generally, Kedarnath temple opens in April or May on the occasion of Akshay Tritiya and closes in October or November on the occasion of Bhai Dooj. ==History and Mythological== The exact date of the origin of the Kedarnath temple is unknown. But as per the holy scriptures and mythological story, it is said that Kedarnath temple was first built by the Pandavas. It is said that after the war of Kurukshetra, Pandavas was in great pain and was guilty of killing their loved ones and gurus in the war. They went to Lord Krishna and asked him for a solution to get rid of their guilt. Lord Krishna suggested they visit Lord Shiva, as he is the only one who can relieve them of this sin. So after handing over their kingdom to their descendants, they went to Kashi in search of Lord Shiva. But Shiva was very angry with the Pandavas due to the huge bloodshed in the war. So he escaped from Kashi and went to a place now in Uttarakhand known as Guptkashi. This place got its name from Guptkashi, as Lord Shiva opted for this place to hide himself. But Pandavas also reached Guptkashi, searching for Lord Shiva. Then Lord Shiva went to a small hamlet in the Himalayas known as Kedar. Pandavas was also determined to meet him, so he went there, following him. Lord Shiva tried to deceive the Pandavas by taking the form of a bull. But Bhima (the strongest among the Pandavas) noticed a bull grazing with other animals at Kedar village and understood that it was none other than Lord Shiva. So he went close to the bull to catch him, but the bull started entering the earth. Bhima kept his stronghold on the bull from his hump, and other Pandavas had requested that he come in his original form. Lord Shiva took pity on them and appeared in his original form. Body parts of the bull appeared at five different places now in Uttarakhand with a hump in Uttarakhand. All these five places are collectively known as Panch Kedar. Pandavas requested Lord Shiva to stay there in the form of shiv linga to help devotees in guilt get relief from their sins. So Lord Shiva stayed at that place and was known as Kedarnath, which means "God of the Field." Pandavas had constructed a temple around the Shivlinga, which is now known as Kedarnath Temple. As per the archaeologists, it is also said that the Kedarnath temple was again renovated by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century and then by Raja Bhoj of Bhopal in the 10th and 11th centuries. ==Get in== Kedarnath (about 3400 m high) is approachable on foot from Gaurikund (about 2900m high), which is connected by road to Rishikesh, Kotdwar, Dehradun, Haridwar and other important hill stations of Garhwal and Kumaon region. Daily buses/taxis from Hardwar/Rishikesh/Dehradun ply during the pilgrim season (approx May to October) and take you to Sonprayag. All the vehicles are allowed up to Sonprayag after disaster in June 2013. There are sharing jeeps available from Sonprayag to Gaurikund. The distance between Sonprayag to Gaurikund is 05 Km. The road ends here. After the disaster in 2013 Govt has made a new trekking route after Rambara and repaired the older trek up to Rambara. Kedarnath is a steep 16 km trek from Gauri Kund (horses and palanquins are available for hire) by using a new trek. There are 10 aviation companies operating a helicopter service to Kedarnath ji from Guptkashi, Phata, and Sersi. There are actually two different helicopter services for Kedarnath. The first is the helicopter charter service which starts at Dehradun and makes it possible to do Kedarnath Yatra by Helicopter in a single day. The other is the shuttle service which operates from helipads located along the road from Guptkashi to Sitapur. While the first one is quite expensive and may cost about INR 2.5 lac for 4-5 persons, the second one is much more affordable at about INR 7000 per person.0 Comments 0 Shares
